Mobile Device Management Migration to the Cloud for Engineering Manufacturer

Streamline your MDM with cloud migration and enhance security

This large engineering manufacturer, which was occupied with managing the on-premises variant of VMware Unified Endpoint Management (UEM), found it to be a time-consuming, complex, and high cost solution to upgrade and maintain. Furthermore, the organization encountered limitations, as the latest and greatest features were not readily available for their current on-premises deployment. Consequently, they wanted to focus on the management and security of its movbile devices to create better services and value for the business instead.

comdivision was called in to support the customer's MDM team, to help with complex migration to the cloud. More then 2000 managed devices had to be migrated without impacting employees.

The comdivision team first did a healtcheck of the VMware UEM infrastructure and made improveements that were required to upgrade the environment to the latest version to avoid compatibility issues with the current VMware UEM Cloud version.

The Challenge

·       Time-Consuming Upgrades: Upgrading the on-premises VMware UEM infrastructure was a lengthy and resource-intensive process that lead to operational disruptions and delayed deployment of new features.

·       Complex Maintenance: Ongoing maintenance tasks required extensive expertise and consumed valuable IT resources, diverting focus from strategic initiatives.

·       Costly Operations: The high cost associated with maintaining the on-premises infrastructure was a concern and impacted the overall budget for IT operations.

·       Feature Lag: The organization faced a challenge in staying up-to-date with the latest features of VMware UEM, limiting the capabilities of their mobile device management solution.

The Solution

The customer embraced a cloud-based deployment of VMware Workspace ONE to streamline their operations. This shift alleviated the complexities associated with on-premises infrastructure, providing a foundation for seamless scalability and adaptability to their evolving business needs. Leveraging Workspace ONE Access, the organization fortified its security. By implementing conditional-based access controls, IT ensured that the business could securely access resources only when both user and device compliance criteria were met, thus enhancing overall security measures.

The introduction of a centralized application portal marked a significant improvement in user experience. This streamlined the app distribution process, making it more efficient and user-friendly. Simultaneously, it alleviated the burden of app management on the IT team by allowing for a more centralized and simplified approach. Automated updates became a valuiable feauture with Workspace ONE's cloud-based architecture. This facilitated the seamless delivery of the latest features and security updates without the need for time-consuming manual interventions.

The Result

After the migration, the customer benefited from the following:

·       Efficiency Gains: The transition to VMware Workspace ONE significantly reduced the time and resources required for upgrades and maintenance, allowing the IT team to focus on strategic initiatives.

·       Cost Savings: The move to a cloud-based model brought about substantial cost savings by eliminating the need for extensive on-premises infrastructure maintenance.

·       Feature Advancements: Workspace ONE provided the customer with access to the latest and greatest features of VMware UEM, ensuring that they remained at the forefront of mobile device management capabilities.

·       Enhanced Security: Workspace ONE Access's conditional-based access controls elevated the organization's security by safeguarding sensitive data and resources.

·       Improved User Experience: The central app portal streamlined application access, enhancing the overall user experience and reducing support tickets related to app management.
