Using the Philips 499P9H with a 13" Macbook Pro and a Blackmagic eGPU pro

Today a non VMware topic... My workplace needed some more screen estate and while colleagues go for multiple screens I personally prefer the one screen solution, which naturally pushed towards one of the new 49" SuperWide screens which you can find from Philips like the 499P9H which I use, or Dell U4919DW has one as well. Be careful that you check the screen resolution, there are models on 49" which are 3840x1080, which would be too low for me, only some have 5120 x 1440 pixel LCDs.While 5120 x 1440 is not a native 5K resolution it is considered by the Apple Macbook a 5K screen, which means it's going to put some heavy load on the internal GPU which especially if you have the 13" apple macbook can be a burden. So as my good friend Matthias Eisner made very good experience with the BlackMagic eGPU I was to settle for the BlackMagic eGPU pro which also supports 5K over display port or thunderbolt (No the vendor does not mention 5K over USB-C which is another different story (wink) ).

Managing Chromebooks with VMware Workspace One and Chrome Enterprise

I just got engaged in a customer project for Workspace ONE. This European customer wants to lower his TCO on mobile devices, as they currently hand out many Notebooks to their employees and Windows Notebook require a lot of management from the customer side. So they raised the question if it is possible to include Chromebooks in their environment and to fully manage them with their MDM solution – VMware Workspace ONE UEM.

Linking vRealize Orchestrator (vRO) to vCloud Director (vCD) for Service Management

One of the new features in vCloud Director since version 9.1 is the ability to execute vRealize Orchestrator workflows direct from within the vCloud Director User Interface for both tenant and service provider usage. With the constant addition of other extensibility features this becomes a very attractive solutions for service providers to expand from standard vCloud Director based IaaS to some more advanced service offerings.

Installing Workspace ONE UEM Agent on devices in use, but without any software deployment solution

Two months ago, I got engaged in a customer project for Workspace ONE. On Key Requirement was the installation of the Workspace ONE UEM Agent (aka. AWAgent) on Windows 10 Devices (Notebooks and Clients) which were already handed over to the End users. The IT of the Customer does not have any kind of software deployment tools like Microsoft’s SCCM or Symantec Altiris and so on. So, it was necessary to find a solution for deploying the agent without any additional tools, only GPO should be utilized.

Understanding JSON objects

I am working as a VCI and teach a lot of trainings with vRO content and often get the question about JSON objects in vRealize Orchestrator and how they work and how they can be built easily. That’s the reason I decided to write an article about that topic with the approach, which helped me, understanding a JSON object.

How to use the vRealize Orchestrator API Explorer

It took me a while to figure out, how to use the vRO API explorer creating necessary code for workflows. Now is the time to share the knowledge. The API explorer, together with the MOB (Managed Object Browser) of the vCenter Server, provides a very powerful combination to develop code. Often you need to create specific objects to reconfigure virtual machines or hosts for example and you need to collect the information, how an object is created on the one hand and on the other hand how to manipulate an object.Let’s start how to access the API explorer. You have two possibilities, either using the API explorer in a dedicated window or directly within a scriptable task.

Upgrade PostgreSQL database (from 9.x to 10) and vCloud Director to 9.5

If you are still using PostgreSQL 9.x with vCloud Director you will receive a big stop sign if you try to upgrade to vCloud Director 9.5, as this version requires PostgreSQL to be on v10 as a minimum. In this blog post I will walk you step by step on how to upgrade PostgreSQL on a CentOS system, as well as how to apply the vCloud Director 9.5 upgrade. I am pretty sure the process on RedHat is similar, but i had no system to validate at hand.
